What Is an HR Licence?

An HR licence authorises you to drive:

  • Rigid vehicles with three or more axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 15 tonnes, such as large trucks and buses.
  • Vehicles designed to carry heavy loads that exceed the limits of the Medium Rigid (MR) class.

This licence is essential for operating heavy trucks used in freight, construction, and other commercial industries.

Eligibility & Licensing Process

To obtain an HR licence in Queensland, you must:

  • Hold a current Class C (car) licence for at least 2 years, or
  • Hold a current Medium Rigid (MR) licence for at least 1 year.

If you hold an overseas car licence that is more than 2 years old, you may be eligible to apply for an HR licence without waiting an additional 2 years after obtaining your Queensland car licence.

Additional requirements include:

  • Passing the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test.
  • Successfully completing the practical Heavy Vehicle Driving Test for the HR class at an approved TMR test centre.

Excel Training QLD supports you throughout this process, offering comprehensive preparation for both the knowledge test and practical driving exam to ensure you meet all TMR requirements and gain the skills to operate heavy rigid vehicles safely.
