Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence

What Is an HR Licence?

An HR licence authorises you to drive:

  • Rigid vehicles with three or more axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 15 tonnes, such as large trucks and buses.
  • Vehicles designed to carry heavy loads that exceed the limits of the Medium Rigid (MR) class.

This licence is essential for operating heavy trucks used in freight, construction, and other commercial industries.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for an HR licence in Queensland, you must:

  • Age: Be at least 18 years old.
  • Licence Holding Period: Hold a valid Class C (car) licence for a minimum of 2 years .
  • Medical Fitness: Declare that you are medically fit to drive the class of vehicle. If you have a medical condition that may affect your driving, you may need to provide a medical certificate from your doctor .

Licence Conditions

Your HR licence may have conditions based on the type of vehicle you use during the practical test:

  • Condition A: Restricted to automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Condition B: Allows driving vehicles with synchromesh gearboxes (manual transmission without crash gears).
  • Unconditional: Permits driving vehicles with any type of gearbox, including crash gearboxes.

To obtain an unconditional licence, you must pass the practical test in a vehicle equipped with a crash gearbox .

Testing & Training

  1. Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test:
    • A written or online test covering road rules and safety specific to heavy vehicles.
    • You must answer at least 8 out of 10 multiple-choice questions correctly .
    • Can be taken at a Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Customer Service Centre. 
  2. Practical Driving Test:
    • Conducted in a suitable HR-class vehicle.
    • Assesses your ability to operate a heavy rigid vehicle safely.
    • Must be booked in advance through TMR.

We prepare learners for driving tests at official Queensland Transport and Main Roads testing centres, including:

  • Northside: Zillmere, Redcliffe, Strathpine, Caboolture
  • Southside: Wynnum, Cleveland, Logan, Bethania, Ipswich
  • Gold Coast: Helensvale, south port, Burleigh heads

What to Bring on Test Day

Please ensure you bring the following to your practical driving test:

  • Valid Queensland learner or driver licence
  • Closed-in shoes for safety
  • Any required identification or documents as per TMR guidelines
