What Is an HC Licence?

An HC licence authorises you to drive:

  • A rigid vehicle towing a trailer with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 9 tonnes.

This licence is essential for operating heavy combination vehicles used in freight, logistics, and other commercial industries.

  • Licence Holding Period: Hold a valid Medium Rigid (MR) or Heavy Rigid (HR) licence for a minimum of 12 months.
  • Medical Fitness: Declare that you are medically fit to drive the class of vehicle. If you have a medical condition that may affect your driving, you may need to provide a medical certificate from your doctor .

Licence Conditions

Your HC licence may have conditions based on the type of vehicle you use during the practical test:

    • Condition A: Restricted to automatic transmission vehicles.
    • Condition B: Allows driving vehicles with synchromesh gearboxes (manual transmission without crash gears).
    • Unconditional: Permits driving vehicles with any type of gearbox, including crash gearboxes.
    • To obtain an unconditional licence, you must pass the practical test in a vehicle equipped with a crash gearbox .
