What Is an MR Licence?

An MR licence permits you to drive:

  • Rigid vehicles with two axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8 tonnes, including trucks and buses
  • Trailers with a maximum GVM of 9 tonnes, provided the total vehicle combination complies with Gross Combination Mass (GCM) limits
  • Certain special purpose vehicles such as tractors and bob-tail prime movers with a GVM under 15 tonnes

This licence is essential for operating medium rigid trucks commercially or privately in Queensland.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for an MR licence in Queensland, you must:

  • Age: Be at least 18 years old.
  • Licence Holding Period: Hold a valid Class C (car) licence for a minimum of 12 months.
  • Medical Fitness: Declare that you are medically fit to drive the class of vehicle. If you have a medical condition that may affect your driving, you may need to provide a medical certificate from your doctor.

Licence Conditions

Your MR licence may have conditions based on the type of vehicle you use during the practical test:

  • Condition A: Restricted to automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Condition B: Allows driving vehicles with synchromesh gearboxes (manual transmission without crash gears).
  • Unconditional: Permits driving vehicles with any type of gearbox, including crash gearboxes.

To obtain an unconditional licence, you must pass the practical test in a vehicle equipped with a crash gearbox.
